2011 In Review: Music (Part 1)

2011 was an extremely musically charged year for me. In fact, when it comes to these year end lists, music had so much influence on me that it makes the other “reviews” I’ll do seem lackluster. I have added 9.12 GB worth of music to my iTunes this year (that’s approximately 1400 new songs) and that’s not even all of the music I’ve acquired this year. I’m scared to do the math and see what my Amazon MP3 bill looks like.

Anyway, because music was so prominent this year, I plan to break my music review into two parts for you. What you’re seeing now are the Top Ten Most Played Songs. Keep an eye out for Part 2 – featuring the Best *New Bands of 2011 and the corruptors who made it possible! :)

*New to me, not necessarily new to the world

Top Ten Most Played Songs

Every month this year, I’ve done an “On Repeat” post of the music currently getting a lot of love that month. If you’ve been paying attention all year, most of the songs in this top ten should seem a little familiar to you.

10. Sixx: A.M. – "Pray for Me"

I was a fan of Motley Crue growing up so when Heather turned me onto Sixx: A.M. and I realized the band featured Nikki Sixx from Motley Crue it was pretty easy to give them a shot. Clearly, the fact that this song makes this top-ten list is evidence that I ended up loving them. (Warning: The video is explicit)

9. Three Days Grace – “Scared”

So badly I've wanted a character to own this song, but nope, no ones stepped up to the plate for it yet. That didn’t mean I couldn’t love it though, and play it ad nauseam just because I wanted to. That does happen sometimes, after all. 😉

8. Tides of Man – “Chemical Fires”

It surprises me a little that this song got so many plays so quickly considering the band itself is still fairly new to me, but once a certain character of mine heard it, he demanded I listen to it over and over again while working on his book in November. Also, it doesn’t hurt that overall this band flat out rocks and reminds me of a band I grew up loving.

7. The Kills – “U.R.A. Fever”

Imagine two wayward teens, one of which used to be popular. They share a common trait, a special ability, but no one else knows that. Now picture them walking onto campus in one of those slow motion walk sequences like you’ve seen in movies like Road Trip. Suddenly, they seem cool. This is the imagery that belongs to this song for me. Two characters from a companion novel to my first book own this song for this reason and when I received the song, I just knew whenever I return to writing their book that this track will be played so-so many more times than it already has been.

6. Artifex Pereo – “The Lantern & the Firefly”

Everything by this band is so easy to write too, especially for Crack the Sky because their sound overall just fits the tone of that book so perfectly. It’s the kind of music I imagine the lead male listening to so it’s easy to just have it on in the background when I’m writing. This song in particular, though, will actually represent a major turning point in the book and writing that scene will be so much fun! I imagine, as I aim to complete Crack the Sky in 2012, that this track will bleed into the New Year and get heaps more plays.

5. Emarosa – “Breather”

I didn’t even get into Emarosa until late in the year, but this song became the backdrop of the intro to my NanoWrimo novel and as a result was played over 285 times! I love when bands I like release wordless music, especially when it’s as epic as this track. Sometimes it’s the best stuff to write to!

4. Prom Kings – “Angels”

When I first heard this song I loved it right away and I was grateful for the way it seemed to wake up characters I’d long given up on. It became representation of the way the story will end, something I had no idea of when the story had first come to me, and partly the reason I thought it was a dead story. At the time I had no idea this story would be a book I’d actually start working on, but it became my NanoWrimo novel and this song got even more plays than I could have expected!

3. White Rabbits – “Midnight & I”

White Rabbits is a band I really got into last year honestly, but for some reason in the beginning of 2011 I couldn’t get enough of them again and this song in particular. Again, this is a song that was used for a book and it is largely the reason for its repetitive nature. Even if it hadn’t been used for a book though, I would have still loved its moody piano based sound.

2. Sick Puppies – “I Hate You”

I can’t even remember what the first Sick Puppies song I heard was at this point because once I acquired all of their music this song completely dominated my ears. While I will say that everything by this group is extremely easy to listen to, this song in particular got the most plays not just because I liked it, but also because characters from a four book series I plan to write claimed it as theirs. Characters, as you’ve already seen, have a lot of power over me when it comes to my music selection.

1. The Left Rights – “I’m on Crack”

Certifiably the strangest song in this list, I know. I listened to this song ad nauseam last January when they first released it. It’s a side project from Mindless Self Indulgence singer, Jimmy Urine (whom I love), and I just couldn’t help myself.  It’s also a short song so its play count quickly climbed higher than the others because of this.

What lived on repeat for you in 2011?

November: On Repeat (Special Edition)

Since November was NanoWrimo month I didn’t really allow my ears to hear much outside of the playlist for my NanoNovel, Crack the Sky. Because of this I’ve decided to simply post said playlist (or at least the 10 songs with the highest play counts at the end of my NanoWrimo mania).

Also, if you’re interested in seeing some snippets from Crack the Sky click HERE!

Emarosa – “Breather”

He Is Legend – “Mean Shadows”

Artifex Pereo – “The Lantern & the Firefly”

Three Days Grace – “Overrated”

Thrice – “Moving Mountains”

Red – “Watch You Crawl”

Tides of Man – “Chemical Fires”

Prom Kings – “Angels”

Sharon Van Etten – “Love More”

Florence + the Machine – “Seven Devils”

Since I will most likely listen to nothing but Christmas music in December and plan to do the 25 Days of Christmas Music posts like I did last year, this will be the last On Repeat post of the year. At the end of December though, keep an eye out for my 2011 in Review posts, of which there will be more than one music themed one this year!

April: On Repeat (Super Late)

Part of the reason I’m so late posting this is because there were seriously so many songs on repeat this month (April was like a music explosion month for me because edgyauthor (Heather) sent me a boatload of goodies) and I typically try to keep this list to 10 tracks. This time I’m going to keep it to 10 artists instead and post one most played track and the others that were played nearly as much as links in case you’re interested. Another reason I’m so late though, is that my work situation is robbing my energy source and by the time I get home, I’m not up for much except eating dinner and going to bed. Sorry. :(

Sick Puppies

For as much as I LOVE this band, it’s really hard to believe I’m just learning about them now because of Heather, but I’m ecstatic that I have now because they’ve quickly become one of my favorite bands! This month the most played track was “I Hate You” and it will most definitely be used in the next book series I write!

Other tracks played ad nauseam were: “You’re Going Down”“Cancer”“So What I lied” and “War” – two of which will be featured on my current WIP! 😉

Morningwood

This is a band that I can’t believe I just realized existed because the lead singer is married to the lead singer of another band (Mindless Self Indulgence) that I’ve loved for years! Regardless, finding them just now left me with lots of music to enjoy and as a result there were lots of tracks on repeat this month. Most played was “Best of Me.”

Other songs that I just couldn’t get enough of include: ”Everybody Rules””Hot Tonight” and ”Body 21” the last of which will likely be featured on my current WIP!

Finger Eleven

Again, this is another band Heather turned me onto and after receiving both of their albums for my birthday I am happy to include them in my list of favorite bands! The most played song this month was “Any Moment Now.”

Other songs that lived on repeat though were: “Paralyzer” (which I already knew, but had no idea was a Finger Eleven song) and ”Living in a Dream”.

Joshua James & the Forest Rangers

This song opened the premeire to Season 3 of Sons of Anarchy (which you should know based on previous posts, I LOVE). This song is a cover of a song by Herman’s Hermits, but I just LOVE Joshua James & the Forest Rangers version so very much!

Black Light Burns

I’ve already posted a few Black Light Burns songs before because Heather’s been teasing me with their music for a couple of months now, but after receiving their album this month it’s safe to say that I LOVE them! The whole album could easily be listened to non-stop, but the most played song for me this month was “Cruel Melody.”

Kerli

Kerli is just “fun” in my opinion. Poppy, with a little rock like edge and I like that! *This is another artist Heather turned me onto* The most played tracked this month was “Walking on Air.”

Another song that got mad plays was ”Strange Boy” which I’m pretty sure will make my current WIP’s playlist 😉

Puddle of Mudd

I won’t say Heather turned me onto this band because I’d definitely heard of them before, but she definitely made me pay attention to a band I’d foolishly ignored for far too many years. There are so many great songs by them (as you’ve seen me post for a few months now), but this month the most played track was “Control” which I’m pretty sure will be featured on my next book series as well as one of the other most played tracks. This band rocks, period!

Other tracks that were played LOTS: ”Basement” and ”Bottom”

Arctic Monkeys

I think if you’ve followed my blog long enough you should already know by now that Arctic Monkeys are by far my favorite band and with the release of their new album coming soon they’ve been releasing singles to tease people like me. This month’s teaser was “Don’t Sit Down Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair” and just like the first single from this upcoming CD, I loved it!

Three Days Grace

This is totally another band like Puddle of Mudd where I’d definitely heard of them and knew a song or two, but had not idea how much I’d love them as a whole until Heather schooled me. While I honestly love MANY of their songs, this month’s most played song was “Burn.”

The Afters

The credit for knowing this band completely goes to Heather, but finding these latest “loves” go to my Mom surprisingly. While heading to WW, we were listening to the Christen Rock XM station and a The Afters track came on that I’d never heard before, even though I have quite a bit of their music already. Turns out it was from a newer album that I didn’t have so of course I bought it that night and as a result “Say it Now” was played SO MUCH!

And ”We won’t Give Up” was played almost just as much! I think both tracks are soundtrack worthy for my current WIP!

I hope you enjoyed April’s “On Repeat” – I know I certainly did! Any guesses what might pop up in next month’s “On Repeat”? 😉 Here’s a hint of a possibility: The Beastie Boys are BACK! (Check it – EVERY person in this video is a celebrity, can you spot them all?)

Peace – Sarah

—————–

EDIT: OMG, how could I forget… this track doesn’t seem like it had THAT many plays according to my iTunes, but mainly because it’s 38+ minutes long so to replay constantly would consume the day quickly and in all honesty, I hit “replay” after the first 16 minutes several times (which iTunes doesn’t record)… Anyway, this track is absolutely going to be featured on my next big book series and has fulfilled so many scenes it’s sick. There’s no video, but it was done by an old high school friend of mine, Matty Scoll, and you need to hear his skills!

Viper Room Set

You can hear his latest track “Gasp” HERE!

February: On Repeat

Sponsored by Heather (aka edgyauthor)

To put it simply, Heather and I are both music junkies. And we’re so musically connected that it seemed like a battle of who could corrupt who more this month with our music suggestions. It was unbelievably fun! Needless to say though, she may have won because all except 3 of this month’s tracks on repeat were provided by her.

Because she was such a good-bad influence this month I’ll start with the songs she had me playing the most (and in the order she turned me onto them).

The first song fit my current WIP’s soundtrack so perfectly I just couldn’t not love it.

SafetySuit – “Find A Way”

This song has the exact sort of fiery intensity I like, gets my blood pumping, and knowing the purpose it will one day serve makes it even cooler!

Three Days Grace – “Scared”

The next two songs are by the same artist (Sick Puppies) and once I started listening to them together on repeat around 2am I just lost track of time completely. The next thing I knew it was 6am, we were still chatting in Gchat, and the songs were still on a loop. I just couldn’t stop rocking out to them!

Sick Puppies – “Survive”

-AND-

Sick Puppies – “The Bottom”

After these first batches of corruption (which came with other songs as well, but those listed above just stood out the most to me), the battle to outdo each other really seemed to begin. Next came two artists I’d never even heard of before, but loved instantly!

Red – “Death of Me”

-AND-

Boomkat – “The Wreckoning”

And finally, she really turned me onto a band called, Avenged Sevenfold, but of all of the songs I’ve heard so far by them this one will not leave my brain!

Avenged Sevenfold – “Bat Country”

You have no idea how many more songs she got me into this month, but of them all those listed above hold the most potential and currently have the highest play counts according to iTunes. Thanks, Heather! Music Corruption is so damn fun with you :)

Now, outside of everything she got me into this month, I also found a couple of songs on my own (or with the aid of other friends) that I just had to have and hear a million times. The first was just too beautiful to pass up, and the second one definitely makes my current WIP’s soundtrack. In fact I’ve already started the scene it belongs to and it’s HOT! And the third… well it has such a great danceable beat, but oh, Rihanna, you’re so naughty! HAHA!

Adele – “Rolling In The Deep”

-AND-

Miguel – “Sure Thing”

-AND-

Rihanna – “S & M”

As you can see it was a BIG music month for me, especially considering how little days there actually were in February. It was such a fun month though (where music’s concerned at least). You think this ton of newbies will hold me over throughout next month? Ha! It’s seriously doubtful. I’ve been told I bleed music and I think it might just be one of the most accurate descriptions of how much I need music.

Until Next Time,
Sarah
