Works-In-Progress (or maybe: Projects I *should* be working on)

It’s been a long time since I really talked about writing. I mean, sure, I’ve moaned about my lack of time for it and how creatively dead my brain has been, but when is the last time I really talked about the books themselves? I think it’s been ages, to be honest. Like, possibly years even. Perhaps you don’t even really know anything at all about my completed novel Dreamsters, except that it’s in the horror/thriller category. And so, with the help of some awesome art I commissioned artist and friend, Heather R. Holden, to do, I’m going to talk about my writing – what it’s about, what I’ve got, what I need, and where I’m going with it – and maybe it will not only intrigue you, but help me get back into, you know, actually working on them again. :)

*Click the images to see them larger!*

Dreamsters (not an actual title – that is still undecided)

About: This story is about a creepy old lady, a girl with a nightmare curse, and a foolishly kind boy who feels compelled to get involved with them both. I consider this story a nod to one of my favorite horror films A Nightmare on Elm Street, though more thriller than horror, maybe. 😉

What I’ve Got: A completed manuscript at around 70K words.

What it Needs: A completed 2nd draft. I’d started on this a couple months after I finished the 1st draft last year, but there are still major portions of the book, particularly at the end, that need heavy rewriting to finalize a 2nd draft.

Where it’s Going: Publication? I hope. It was my intention to have this 2nd draft sharp enough to start looking for an agent this year, but so far this unfortunately hasn’t been the case.

Picture background: This comes from the end of Chapter 2. Milo’s stayed up late to get ahead on some homework and just before going to bed, glances out his window at Mrs. Womack’s house across the street. This is the scene he sees and the lines from the book look like this:

Illuminated by the street lamp is a girl in a red plaid, pleated skirt, with black tights and clunky boots, and a black leather jacket being destroyed by the rain. And a boy significantly shorter than her, holding her hand, in a hoodie and cargo pants that look too big for his small frame. Each of them carry just one bag, hardly large enough to hold any decent amount of personal possessions, and they stare at Mrs. Womack’s front door from her gate.

I don’t need to see their faces to know who they are.

Crack the Sky

About: I’ll let the main character tell you what Crack the Sky is about. 😉

My name is Tilian King and I found a girl in the woods one night. I sound like a fool for saying it, but I swear the lightning led the way.  She was covered in blood; I’m *practically* a saint for saving her.

She claims she’s my guardian angel and that demons took her wings so she can’t protect me. From what, she won’t say.

She also claims my girlfriend and father are demons and that my dead mother is an angel like her. I asked her what that makes me, but again, she won’t say.

I think she’s f@$%ing insane. Escaped from the looney bin or some shit. It’s somehow both annoying and hilarious to me.

Still, and I’d never admit it out loud, it is sort of nice having someone to share the lonely mansion I call home with now, since my dad’s never around. Plus, who doesn’t love poking fun at naiveté? Leilani’s chock-full of it and I’m as rotten as they come.

If you’d like to see a few examples of scenes from Crack the Sky, I’d actually posted some when I started this book in 2011 for NanoWrimo. Click HERE! (Note: these scenes were roughly written and have since been polished so they aren’t the final product by any means.)

What I’ve Got: About 18K words, or just shy of 1/3 of the story.

2015_Comm_Torn_Small

What it Needs: The rest? About 50K more words? No, in all seriousness, it needs the meat of the story. Crack the Sky is an intense sort of story, with a great deal of tough decisions and bloodshed. This first 18K has been the introductory phase, the buildup of backstory, and the planted seeds of character growth. Next, things get crazy. 😉

Where it’s Going: Oops, I think I sort of answered that above? I guess I could add that it’s not going to have a happy ending. Okay, so it won’t be super awful, but not the happily ever after type of ending that’s all too common these days because life doesn’t always work that way so why should make believe? 😉

Picture background: I’d told Heather that if this picture were titled I’d call it, “Torn,” because that’s the feeling I wanted to come across for Tilian. So that it’s not too spoilery, I won’t tell you much about what’s going on in it outside of TORN, but I will tell you who you’re looking at! (L) Mackenzie, Tilian’s Girlfriend (M) Tilian King, POV of the book (R) Leilani, Tilian’s Guardian Angel.

So, those are my current, big works-in-progress. I have another novel idea that springs up every summer, but never produces much words and another that I hope to eventually return to one day, as it was the first story I ever wanted to make into a novel, but both require a lot of world building and I’m just not sure I’m a good enough writer for that just yet.

If you’ve enjoyed the art accompanying these descriptions and think you’d like some of your own, head on over to Heather’s site for commission guidelines and prices! Or if you’re just a fan of the art and don’t need any for yourself, give her web comic Echo Effect a shot. She’s an excellent storyteller, too!

My Best Friend > Your Best Friend

I guess it shouldn't surprise me that Heather () would chose to spoil me on her favorite holiday of year, but personally I've never gotten Halloween gifts before her and it's not like I deserve them anyway so imagine my delight when the following showed up in the mail today for Halloween!

photo (smaller)
(Vampire Knight Manga #1, Framed art of my character Bryce, her character Arden, and my character Tilian dressed up for a Halloween party, and a cute Halloween Snow-globe)

In case you can't see how cool that art is, here's the digital version:

(Like Heather's Art? She takes commission requests now! Click HERE, if you're interested in custom work!)

I don't know what I ever did to get such an awesome best friend/critique partner, but I know that I am the luckiest.

Do any of you celebrate Halloween with gifts or festive cards? If so, what fun things did you get/give from/to your friends?

My Best Friend is made of Awesomesauce!

Why, you’re wondering?

Because she published a freaking book for me for Christmas this year!

I never talked about it here for some reason (probably because I suck at cross-blogging), but back in October Heather made THIS for me. (Be sure to read the explanation behind it.)

Well this year for Christmas, not only did she send me framed art of our characters (even featuring my latest novel’s lead male!), she also published a book – all shiny and colorful – called, “Torture Christmas Art,” the first volume of more to come hopefully!  I can’t show you every page or this would be a mighty long post (and spoilerific!), but check out the pictures I have included! It’s awesome, right?

Yeah… my best friend rocks! You jelly? 😉

P.S. See that snarky blonde haired boy? His name is Arden. You should check out this Christmas short story featuring him called, “Holiday Sneer”!

April: On Repeat (Super Late)

Part of the reason I’m so late posting this is because there were seriously so many songs on repeat this month (April was like a music explosion month for me because edgyauthor (Heather) sent me a boatload of goodies) and I typically try to keep this list to 10 tracks. This time I’m going to keep it to 10 artists instead and post one most played track and the others that were played nearly as much as links in case you’re interested. Another reason I’m so late though, is that my work situation is robbing my energy source and by the time I get home, I’m not up for much except eating dinner and going to bed. Sorry. :(

Sick Puppies

For as much as I LOVE this band, it’s really hard to believe I’m just learning about them now because of Heather, but I’m ecstatic that I have now because they’ve quickly become one of my favorite bands! This month the most played track was “I Hate You” and it will most definitely be used in the next book series I write!

Other tracks played ad nauseam were: “You’re Going Down”“Cancer”“So What I lied” and “War” – two of which will be featured on my current WIP! 😉

Morningwood

This is a band that I can’t believe I just realized existed because the lead singer is married to the lead singer of another band (Mindless Self Indulgence) that I’ve loved for years! Regardless, finding them just now left me with lots of music to enjoy and as a result there were lots of tracks on repeat this month. Most played was “Best of Me.”

Other songs that I just couldn’t get enough of include: ”Everybody Rules””Hot Tonight” and ”Body 21” the last of which will likely be featured on my current WIP!

Finger Eleven

Again, this is another band Heather turned me onto and after receiving both of their albums for my birthday I am happy to include them in my list of favorite bands! The most played song this month was “Any Moment Now.”

Other songs that lived on repeat though were: “Paralyzer” (which I already knew, but had no idea was a Finger Eleven song) and ”Living in a Dream”.

Joshua James & the Forest Rangers

This song opened the premeire to Season 3 of Sons of Anarchy (which you should know based on previous posts, I LOVE). This song is a cover of a song by Herman’s Hermits, but I just LOVE Joshua James & the Forest Rangers version so very much!

Black Light Burns

I’ve already posted a few Black Light Burns songs before because Heather’s been teasing me with their music for a couple of months now, but after receiving their album this month it’s safe to say that I LOVE them! The whole album could easily be listened to non-stop, but the most played song for me this month was “Cruel Melody.”

Kerli

Kerli is just “fun” in my opinion. Poppy, with a little rock like edge and I like that! *This is another artist Heather turned me onto* The most played tracked this month was “Walking on Air.”

Another song that got mad plays was ”Strange Boy” which I’m pretty sure will make my current WIP’s playlist 😉

Puddle of Mudd

I won’t say Heather turned me onto this band because I’d definitely heard of them before, but she definitely made me pay attention to a band I’d foolishly ignored for far too many years. There are so many great songs by them (as you’ve seen me post for a few months now), but this month the most played track was “Control” which I’m pretty sure will be featured on my next book series as well as one of the other most played tracks. This band rocks, period!

Other tracks that were played LOTS: ”Basement” and ”Bottom”

Arctic Monkeys

I think if you’ve followed my blog long enough you should already know by now that Arctic Monkeys are by far my favorite band and with the release of their new album coming soon they’ve been releasing singles to tease people like me. This month’s teaser was “Don’t Sit Down Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair” and just like the first single from this upcoming CD, I loved it!

Three Days Grace

This is totally another band like Puddle of Mudd where I’d definitely heard of them and knew a song or two, but had not idea how much I’d love them as a whole until Heather schooled me. While I honestly love MANY of their songs, this month’s most played song was “Burn.”

The Afters

The credit for knowing this band completely goes to Heather, but finding these latest “loves” go to my Mom surprisingly. While heading to WW, we were listening to the Christen Rock XM station and a The Afters track came on that I’d never heard before, even though I have quite a bit of their music already. Turns out it was from a newer album that I didn’t have so of course I bought it that night and as a result “Say it Now” was played SO MUCH!

And ”We won’t Give Up” was played almost just as much! I think both tracks are soundtrack worthy for my current WIP!

I hope you enjoyed April’s “On Repeat” – I know I certainly did! Any guesses what might pop up in next month’s “On Repeat”? 😉 Here’s a hint of a possibility: The Beastie Boys are BACK! (Check it – EVERY person in this video is a celebrity, can you spot them all?)

Peace – Sarah

—————–

EDIT: OMG, how could I forget… this track doesn’t seem like it had THAT many plays according to my iTunes, but mainly because it’s 38+ minutes long so to replay constantly would consume the day quickly and in all honesty, I hit “replay” after the first 16 minutes several times (which iTunes doesn’t record)… Anyway, this track is absolutely going to be featured on my next big book series and has fulfilled so many scenes it’s sick. There’s no video, but it was done by an old high school friend of mine, Matty Scoll, and you need to hear his skills!

Viper Room Set

You can hear his latest track “Gasp” HERE!

Friday Five

1. Today is my crit partner & best friend, edgyauthor’s, birthday! She’s off on a book buying splurge that I can’t wait to hear all about, but while she’s gone you should all go to her page and wish her a Happy Birthday! Show her some love 😉

2. I have failed miserably at keeping up with LJ and I know it. I mean for those who look for my monthly music post I’m sure you’ve noticed that it’s still not up for April. Like catching up on the f-list, I will make that post this weekend!

3. My characters are back! Not completely back as in writing tons, but they’re all around me all the time again and plotting their next moves. Minor issue: they want to change A LOT. I’ll accept that as long as I’m writing. I’m just waiting for them to say, “Go!”

4. I’ve been reading the Daughters of the Moon series by Lynne Ewing in honor of Heather’s (edgyauthor) birthday month (since it’s her favorite series). I haven’t gotten very far into it yet because I’m trying to let my characters throw some words at me, but so far it seems pretty great (not that I expected anything less) and I’m excited to blow through the first 6 books I already have.

5. Its rumbling outside (YAY spring thunderstorms!) and Tay’s thinking: OMG, Mommy, WHAT WAS THAT?! See:

February: On Repeat

Sponsored by Heather (aka edgyauthor)

To put it simply, Heather and I are both music junkies. And we’re so musically connected that it seemed like a battle of who could corrupt who more this month with our music suggestions. It was unbelievably fun! Needless to say though, she may have won because all except 3 of this month’s tracks on repeat were provided by her.

Because she was such a good-bad influence this month I’ll start with the songs she had me playing the most (and in the order she turned me onto them).

The first song fit my current WIP’s soundtrack so perfectly I just couldn’t not love it.

SafetySuit – “Find A Way”

This song has the exact sort of fiery intensity I like, gets my blood pumping, and knowing the purpose it will one day serve makes it even cooler!

Three Days Grace – “Scared”

The next two songs are by the same artist (Sick Puppies) and once I started listening to them together on repeat around 2am I just lost track of time completely. The next thing I knew it was 6am, we were still chatting in Gchat, and the songs were still on a loop. I just couldn’t stop rocking out to them!

Sick Puppies – “Survive”

-AND-

Sick Puppies – “The Bottom”

After these first batches of corruption (which came with other songs as well, but those listed above just stood out the most to me), the battle to outdo each other really seemed to begin. Next came two artists I’d never even heard of before, but loved instantly!

Red – “Death of Me”

-AND-

Boomkat – “The Wreckoning”

And finally, she really turned me onto a band called, Avenged Sevenfold, but of all of the songs I’ve heard so far by them this one will not leave my brain!

Avenged Sevenfold – “Bat Country”

You have no idea how many more songs she got me into this month, but of them all those listed above hold the most potential and currently have the highest play counts according to iTunes. Thanks, Heather! Music Corruption is so damn fun with you :)

Now, outside of everything she got me into this month, I also found a couple of songs on my own (or with the aid of other friends) that I just had to have and hear a million times. The first was just too beautiful to pass up, and the second one definitely makes my current WIP’s soundtrack. In fact I’ve already started the scene it belongs to and it’s HOT! And the third… well it has such a great danceable beat, but oh, Rihanna, you’re so naughty! HAHA!

Adele – “Rolling In The Deep”

-AND-

Miguel – “Sure Thing”

-AND-

Rihanna – “S & M”

As you can see it was a BIG music month for me, especially considering how little days there actually were in February. It was such a fun month though (where music’s concerned at least). You think this ton of newbies will hold me over throughout next month? Ha! It’s seriously doubtful. I’ve been told I bleed music and I think it might just be one of the most accurate descriptions of how much I need music.

Until Next Time,
Sarah

Oh, by the way, I almost forgot… I actually did two reviews myself in 2010. I prepared several more, but these are the only two I actually posted…
